Certifications and licenses

Write the full license name, the abbreviation, and the state, such as "Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), New York". If you collect supervised hours toward a clinical license, write that and the expected date. License names and levels are different from state to state. Check the rules in your state.

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
All states require a license for clinical social work. It requires a Master of Social Work (MSW), supervised clinical experience after graduation, and usually a clinical exam. Some states use another name, such as LICSW.
Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
Many states use this license for a social worker with a master's degree who does not yet practice clinical work alone. Some states use other names. Check the rules in your state.
Bachelor-level license (such as LBSW)
Some states license or register social workers with a bachelor's degree. Other states do not. Check the rules in your state.
Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) exam
Most states use an ASWB exam at the bachelor's, master's, or clinical level. A new graduate can write the exam level and "passed" with the month.
School social worker certificate
Many states require a separate certificate for a social worker in a public school. Check the rules in your state.
Accredited Case Manager (ACM-SW)
Optional. The American Case Management Association gives it to hospital case managers who are social workers.

Tips for a social worker resume

  1. Put the setting and the license at the top

A hospital, a school, and a child welfare agency each hire for their own setting. Write the setting and your license level in the title line, such as "Medical Social Worker, LCSW". A recruiter then sees at once if you fit the job.

  2. Protect client privacy

Never write a client name, a case detail, or a story that can identify a person. Use counts and percentages, such as "22 children moved to permanent homes". This also shows that you know the confidentiality rules of the profession.

  3. Show your field placements if you are new

Make a section called "Field Experience". Write the agency, the setting, the dates, and the hours for each placement. Add 2 or 3 bullets with numbers, such as assessments completed or groups that you led.

  4. Write your supervision status

A clinical job needs a clinical license or a clear path to it. If you collect supervised hours toward a clinical license, write it, such as "LCSW supervision in progress, expected 2027". Some employers give supervision, so this tells them what you need.

  5. Name the programs and systems that you know

Write the public programs that you work with, such as Medicaid, Medicare, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Write the record systems too, such as Epic. Job postings often ask for these by name.

Frequently asked questions

What license should a social worker put on a resume?

Put each license that you hold now, with the highest level first. Write the full name, the abbreviation, and the state. A clinical job asks for an LCSW or the clinical license of that state. If a license is pending, write "pending" and the expected month.

How do I write a social worker resume with no experience?

Use your field placements as experience. Write the agency, the setting, the hours, and the work that you did, with numbers. Add related work, such as a job as a residential counselor or case aide, or volunteer work on a crisis line. Put your degree and your exam status near the top.

What is the difference between an LMSW and an LCSW on a resume?

An LMSW is usually a master's-level license for work that does not include independent clinical practice. An LCSW lets you diagnose and give psychotherapy without supervision. The exact rules depend on the state. Write the license that you hold now, and add your supervision status if you work toward an LCSW.

How do I move from child welfare to school or hospital social work?

Show the skills that the new setting also uses, such as crisis response, assessment, and work with families. Use the words of the new setting in your summary and skills. Check if the new setting needs a separate credential, such as a school social worker certificate in your state.

Should I put continuing education on a social worker resume?

Most states require continuing education hours to renew a license, so a list of hours does not help a reader. Add a training only when it gives a skill that the job needs, such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT).
