Certifications and licenses

Put "PMP" in your header, next to the name or in the title line. List it again in a certifications section with the full name, the issuer, and the year, because postings use both "PMP" and "Project Management Professional". Do not list a certification that is no longer active. The Project Management Institute (PMI) requires continuing education to keep the PMP active.

Project Management Professional (PMP)
Optional for most jobs, but many postings require it or prefer it. PMI issues it. You need project experience and project management training before you can take the exam.
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)
Optional. PMI issues it. It fits new graduates and project coordinators who do not have the experience for the PMP yet.
PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)
Optional. PMI issues it. It fits project managers who use Agile methods, which are common in software projects.
PRINCE2 Foundation or Practitioner
Optional. PeopleCert issues it. It is more common in the UK and Europe than in the US, so list it when the employer uses the method.
Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt
Optional. It fits process improvement projects in healthcare, manufacturing, and operations. Many organizations issue a belt. For example, the American Society for Quality (ASQ) issues the Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB). Write the issuer.

Tips for a project manager resume

  1. Name the setting and the project type

"Project manager" covers many fields. Write the setting in the title line, such as "healthcare operations" or "software implementation". A hiring manager looks for experience with the same kind of project.

  2. Give value, time, and result for your largest projects

For each large project, write the dollar value, the duration, and the result against the plan. For example: "$6M, 18 months, 2 weeks early, 2.4% under budget". This one line gives the full result.

  3. Show how you controlled risk and change

Every project changes. Write about one problem that you found early, the action that you took, and the effect in days or dollars. A change request rate is a good measure, because a reader can compare it across projects.

  4. List the tools of your field

A software project manager uses Jira and Agile boards. A healthcare operations project manager uses Smartsheet, Microsoft Project, and Lean methods. Put the tools that match the posting in the skills section, and name one in a bullet.

  5. Keep it to one or two pages

Use two pages only when you have many projects to show. List older projects in one short line each. Use a simple layout without tables, so an ATS can read every line.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put PMP on my resume if I have not passed the exam yet?

Do not write "PMP" until you pass the exam. You can write "PMP exam scheduled, March 2027" in the certifications section. If you completed the training hours, write that too, because it shows progress.

How do I write a project manager resume with no project manager title?

Many project managers start in another role. Make a short list of the projects that you led, with the scope, the team size, the budget, and the result. Use verbs such as "led" and "delivered" only for work that you controlled. Add the CAPM or a project management course to show your direction.

What is the difference between a project manager and a program manager resume?

A project manager resume shows single projects with a scope, a schedule, and a budget. A program manager resume shows a group of related projects and the business goal that joins them, such as a new network of outpatient clinics. Use the title that matches your real work.

What skills should a project manager list on a resume?

List the methods that the posting names: scope, schedule, budget, risk, and stakeholder management. Add the tools that you know, such as Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, or Jira. Show soft skills as results, for example workflow decisions from 12 clinical leaders closed 3 weeks early.

Should a project manager resume mention Agile?

Only if you used it. Agile and Scrum are common in software, and less common in healthcare operations. If you used Agile methods on other work, write how, for example short weekly work cycles for a clinic move.
