How to write a sales representative resume summary

Write 3 or 4 sentences. Start with your title, your years of experience, and what you sell to which buyers. Then give your territory or your number of accounts, your quota attainment for the last 1 or 2 years, and one growth number. End with your CRM system or a certification. Do not write "top performer" without a rank or a number.

Sales Representative resume bullet points

Write each bullet with a verb first: the present tense for your current territory, and the past tense for older jobs. Certifications and licenses

Most wholesale and manufacturing sales jobs do not require a license, and a certification is optional. Put the certifications that you have in their own section with the full name, the issuer, and the year. For an outside sales job, write your driver's license in the same section if the job posting asks for one. Add product or safety training when the job posting names the same products or sites.

Valid driver's license
Most outside sales jobs require it, and many ask for a clean driving record. Write it in the certifications section or in the summary.
Certified Sales Professional (CSP)
Optional. The Manufacturers' Representatives Educational Research Foundation (MRERF) gives it. It covers sales skills for people who sell for manufacturers and their representatives.
Certified Professional Manufacturers' Representative (CPMR)
Optional. MRERF gives it to independent manufacturers' representatives. It is most useful if you own or work for a rep agency.
OSHA 10-Hour card
Optional. It is useful when you visit plants or construction sites. Trainers in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Outreach Training Program teach the course.
Manufacturer product training
Optional. Many manufacturers train distributor reps on their product lines. Write the product line when the job posting names the same brands.

Tips for a sales representative resume

  1. Write quota attainment for every sales job

Sales managers look for quota numbers first. Write the percentage, the quota amount, and the year for each job, such as "112% of $6.1M (2025)". If you missed quota in one year, show the other years and your rank in the team.

  2. Separate new accounts from account growth

Some territory jobs ask mostly for new customers. Other jobs ask you to grow the current accounts. Write one bullet for each: the number of new accounts with their sales, and the growth of your current accounts in percent or dollars.

  3. Name the products and the buyers

A sales manager wants to know if you can sell their product to their customers. Write the product types, such as fasteners or packaging, and the buyer types, such as plant managers or purchasing agents. These words often match the words in the job posting.

  4. Show your CRM records

Many wholesale and manufacturing companies use a CRM system, such as Salesforce or HubSpot. Name the system and write what you do with it: call logs, pipeline reports, or forecasts. A number such as forecast accuracy shows that your records are reliable.

  5. Show product knowledge for technical products

Employers that sell technical or scientific products usually ask for a bachelor's degree, often in a field related to the product. Put the degree and any product training near the top. If you do not have the degree, show hands-on product experience, such as work as a technician.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a sales representative resume with no sales experience?

Show the parts of sales that you already did. Retail, customer service, hospitality, and trade jobs all have customers, targets, and numbers. Write the number of customers per shift, the sales targets that you met, and any add-on sales results. Many wholesale employers train new reps on the job, so show that you learn products fast.

Should I put my quota numbers on my resume?

Yes. Quota attainment is the first number that most sales managers look for. Give the percentage, the quota amount, and the year. Do not give confidential customer names or customer prices from a former employer.

What is the difference between inside sales and outside sales on a resume?

An inside sales representative sells by phone, email, and video calls from an office. An outside sales representative visits customers in a territory. Use your exact title. Add the call volume for inside sales or the territory size for outside sales, because the two jobs use different measures.

What certifications help a sales representative resume?

Most jobs do not require a certification. Some reps earn the Certified Sales Professional (CSP), and independent reps can earn the Certified Professional Manufacturers' Representative (CPMR). In industrial sales, manufacturer product training and an OSHA 10-Hour card can also help. A record of quota attainment counts more than any certification.

How long should a sales representative resume be?

A sales resume fits on one page until you have about 8 to 10 years of sales experience. With a longer record, two pages are fine. Put your quota results and awards on the first page in both cases, and keep each bullet to one or two lines.
