Certifications and licenses
Most FP&A jobs do not require a license or a certification. List a certification when you hold it, passed a level of it, or are registered for its exam. For the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Program, use the words that CFA Institute allows. Examples are "Passed Level I of the CFA Program" and "CFA Program candidate". Use "CFA Program candidate" only while you are registered for an exam or wait for results. Do not write "CFA" next to the name in your header until you hold the charter.
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)
- Optional for FP&A, and common in investment analysis. CFA Institute grants the charter after a candidate passes 3 exam levels, meets a work experience rule, and becomes a member of CFA Institute.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Optional. It helps an analyst who moves between accounting and FP&A. Write the state of the license.
- Certified Management Accountant (CMA)
- Optional. The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) issues it. It covers planning, budgets, and performance analysis, so it fits FP&A well.
- Securities exams (SIE, Series 7, Series 63)
- Some securities and investment jobs require them. FP&A jobs do not. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) gives these exams. You can take the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam and the Series 63 without a sponsor. Most other FINRA representative exams, such as the Series 7, need a sponsoring firm.
- Microsoft Certified: Power BI Data Analyst Associate
- Optional. It gives proof of a data skill that many FP&A postings name. Microsoft asks you to renew it each year, so list it only while it is active.

Write for one kind of analyst job
"Financial analyst" covers FP&A, investment analysis, credit, and risk. An FP&A resume shows budgets, forecasts, and work with department heads. An investment resume shows valuation, industry research, and recommendations. Choose one focus for each resume that you send.
Show the size of the budget or the forecast
A finance manager reads a dollar amount as scope. Write the total of the budget that you built and the number of cost centers or business units. A $5M department budget and a $340M company budget are different jobs. Round the number or use a range, and do not share non-public financial data, such as a forecast that is not public.
Measure your forecast accuracy
Compare your forecast with the actual result and give the error as a percentage, before and after your change. If you do not have that number, give the time that you saved in the close or in the forecast cycle.
Name a decision that your analysis supported
Analysis has value when a manager acts on it. Write the decision and the result, such as a price change, a capital project, or a cost cut. Give the dollar effect when you know it.
Put finance tools and data tools in separate groups
Put planning systems such as Oracle Hyperion, Anaplan, or Workday Adaptive Planning in one group. Put SQL, Python, Power BI, and Tableau in a second group. Many postings ask for both kinds, and a reader finds them faster in groups.
Frequently asked questions
How do I write a financial analyst resume with no experience?
Start with your degree, your grade point average (GPA) if it is 3.5 or higher, and any finance internship. Add a financial model or a case competition as a project, with the company, the method, and the result. Name your Excel and SQL skills with specific functions. A Level I pass in the CFA Program also shows interest in the field.
What skills should a financial analyst put on a resume?
Put the core methods first: budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial modeling. Add the systems that you know, such as Excel, an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, a planning tool, SQL, and Power BI or Tableau. Show soft skills in your bullets, for example a report that you presented to executives.
Can I put CFA on my resume if I only passed Level I?
Yes, in the form that CFA Institute allows: "Passed Level I of the CFA Program". If you are registered for the next exam or wait for results, write "CFA Program candidate". Do not write "CFA Level I" or put "CFA" next to the name, because CFA Institute does not allow a partial designation.
How long should a financial analyst resume be?
One page for most analysts with less than 10 years of experience. A senior analyst or a manager with several roles can use two pages. Remove old internships first when you need space.
Do I need an MBA to be a financial analyst?
No. The typical entry education is a bachelor's degree. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) helps for some senior and investment roles. On the resume, list each degree with the school and the year.
